The Passing of an Aviation Giant and his link to Western New York

CY2

This past Monday, December 7, 2020 aviation legend and WWII ace Chuck Yeager passed away at the age of 97.  As an air force test pilot, Yeager was the first person to fly faster than the speed of sound.  On October 14, 1947 Yeager piloted the rocket-powered, orange-painted Bell X-1, nicknamed “Glamorous Glennis” for Yeager’s wife, to Mach 1.05, breaking the sound barrier.  The X-1 was built right here in Buffalo at the Bell Aircraft plant.  After this flight both Yeager and the plane became legends.
